I have heard this phrase time and time again, “If only I could win the lottery”. So many people thing that money will give them everything that they need in their lives. They feel that if the money is there then all the bills will be paid and they will have money to help others. Yes, this is a noble thought but would that thought be there after the money is in hand?
Psalms 37:4 “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” KJV
A lot of people use this verse to say that if it is God’s will I will win the lottery.
People seem to struggle about what really their treasure is in life. Everyone wants more money, to pay off bills, buy things; they feel that their life would be better if they had more money. So this is their true treasure, and where their heart is most of the time.
You see what is in the heart is what we think upon and what we want to lay up for ourselves. Some people want money, some want cars, houses, all kinds of items. Now it is not bad to want a newer car or bigger house, but if that is all you are working toward and thinking about then it becomes an idol in your life.
Wikipedia says that an idol is an image or other material object representing a deity to which religious worship is addressed or any person or thing regarded with admiration, adoration, or devotion. Most Pastors would or should tell you that anything in your life that is more important than serving God and doing His will becomes an idol.
Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” KJV
Anything that we put in front of what we should be doing for God can and has become an idol for many people. It could be that new boat that you just bought and then you realized that Sundays are the best time to be on the lake with it. It could be that new house that you bought and now you have to work extra just to pay the bank note for the house. Or it could be something simple as sports, hunting; anything that takes the time that should be for God.
Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” KJV
Let us all take some time to analyze where we are at in our lives. Are we living for God or ourselves? Are we being an example to our children or are they seeing all the wrong things, and learning by our bad examples. Now I am not perfect and I have no problem telling you this. But I am learning more and more each day what God wants out of my life. I am listening to proven wisdom from others who have already gone through the battle. Guess you can say that I have finally gotten smart in some areas.
I remember many times in my life that I went to get advice from people who were in the same boat as me. If you think about it that is always the worst advice. Why not look for someone who is out of the boat and on dry land and not being tossed around by every storm any more. Wished I would have learned that one quite a few years ago. Wisdom does not always come with age LOL.
Matthew 6:19-21 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” KJV
I am sure that almost everyone has heard that God want to live in us in our hearts but if we are putting other things in there then where can God live? Are we building a house that God would even want to live in? Now there is always time for a DIY project on you. It is never too late, as long as you have a breath in you, you still have the chance to repent, praise Him, and start moving in the right direction, His path instead of your own.
The gift of salvation is free; there is no Lottery that you have to win to receive His gift for you. But we do have to ask for forgiveness, with your heart, and not just words. This is not something that you can just say a few words and then go about your business as usual and think everything is okay. If there is no change then you just wasted your own time.
In the end we will have fruits from our walk. They will either be rotten or ripe, good or bad. This is our choice on what we decide to do in our lives. The choice is yours and has always been. Where is your heart at today? Are you still wanting to win the lottery or are you will to accept the free gift that Jesus Christ died on the cross to give you. Today you will have to choose.
