Denny Trail Work

The Trails in Denny Cove are still incomplete!  We need your help building a sustainable, long lasting trail system.  Meet in the Denny Cove parking lot at 9 am central time.  Work will consist of trail tread construction, moving heavy rocks, and clearing brush and limbs intruding into the trail corridor.  The work day will last approximately 4 hours.

Ecology: A Web of Connection

Each of us depends on functioning eco-systems for survival, from the food that fuels us to the air we breathe, even the smallest of organisms play some part!  Join Ranger Nicholas Mann on a short 2-mile hike and examine the web of connection that sustains and surrounds us.  Bring water, sturdy foot wear, and be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.  The program will go on rain or shine!

TN Snakes and Mammals

Fiery Gizzard Through Hike

Fiery Gizzard Through Hike $50.  The Fiery Gizzard Trail is one of the most difficult day hikes in the southeastern United States.  Rated by Backpacker Magazine as one of the top 20 trails in the whole country!  If you have been wanting to tackle this beast but have been hesitant, here is your chance.  Ranger Ball will be leading a thru-hike of the Fiery Gizzard. This hike is not for everyone, and there are some pre-requisites that must be met in order to attend.  You must be capable of hiking 13 miles continuously, in rough terrain, to attend.  Also, you must have the following equipment; backpack, minimum 3 liters of water, extra layers (rain gear, insulation, etc), headlamp, backup headlamp/light, extra batteries, appropriate footwear (no brand new boots!), small first aid kit,  lunch, other snacks you may want, and some means of water purification. Items you might want to bring; hat, trekking poles, sunglasses, camera, etc. Seriously folks, this hike is no joke. 
Preregistration is required.
Rain or Shine. 
Cancellations may be made 2 days prior.

Volunteer Day: Treat Our Trails

Come out and make an impact that will endure!  We here at South Cumberland State Park are looking for volunteers on continued trail improvement projects.  If you have been inspired by our unique places and wild spaces join Ranger Nicholas Mann in an effort to make our trails the best for you, your family, and our future hikers.  Necessary tools and equipment will be provided.  Please bring water, sturdy foot wear, and be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.  We hope to see you there!

Intro To Birding

 Come join Ranger Ball on the meadow trail for an introduction to the world of birding.  Don’t know anything about birding?  That’s ok, neither does he.  All are welcome!  It will be a learning experience for everyone, unless you are a birding guru.  If that is the case though, teach us the way Sensei.   If you have binoculars be sure to bring those along.  We could walk  up to 1.5 miles.

CCC Camp Restoration

South Cumberland needs your help to revive that Civilian Conservation Corps spirit that so changed the landscape of our country. The 1930s era work program played a vital role in putting young men back to work following the Great Depression and helping to beautify and develop much of the nation.The first and last weekends of each month will be devoted to clearing out and cleaning what was Co. 1475’s camp “Alvin C. York” located within the Grundy Forest. Phase one involves clearing of the forest understory, uncovering historic foundations, and preparing the site for future p[project development.Please come prepared with plenty of water, lunch/snacks, and proper clothing for dirty work.As with most of our volunteer opportunities we welcome all ages and abilities, there’s something for everyone to do.All tools and equipment provided.

Cold Weather Survival:  Wilderness Survival/Bushcraft

Winter Waterfall Hike

Meet Ranger Aaron at the Greeter Falls parking lot for a moderate 2-mile hike around the Greeter Falls Loop trail. We will be hiking past both Greeter Falls and Boardtree Falls, two of the most beautiful waterfalls on the Plateau.  Bring water/snack, and wear sturdy shoes.

Bouldering with the Ranger

South Cumberland is known for its sport climbing, but there are also quality boulders peppered throughout the park.  Join Ranger Reynolds to get a “back-stage pass” to select boulders that lie deep within the woods of Sherwood Forest.  It is highly suggested that participants bring a crash pad, climbing shoes, and other associated gear.  Note:You can only access Old CCC Road from Jumpoff Road; NOT from Sherwood Road! For more information email  Ranger Jason Reynolds.
