SHERWOOD FOREST TRAIL
Join in with other South Cumberland trail blazers to help create a brand new loop trail at the park.The Sherwood Forest is a brand new area that will be opening soon for a variety of public uses. We need your help to get the trails ready!  Please be prepared with sturdy footwear and plenty of water/snacks. If you have favorite trail-building tools or pairs of gloves, feel free to bring them. Note:You can only access Old CCC Road from Jumpoff Road; NOT from Sherwood Road! Meet at Sherwood Forest.

Ranger Gheesling hosts a program designed for the youngest nature lovers!  It’s story time, crafts, and a short hike around the Savage Station Campground for kids 1-5 (all ages welcome).  Meet at the Savage Gulf Picnic Area or, in case of rain, the Savage Gulf Ranger Station.

SAVAGE DAY LOOP TRAIL RUN

Like to run with others?  Ranger Gheesling welcomes runners of all levels for this 4.2 mile run along the relatively flat, but exciting and scenic, Savage Day Loop.  Meet at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station.

SAVAGE FALLS HIKE
2:00 pm –
The destination is Savage Falls for this 4 mile round-trip hike.  The 30-foot waterfall marks the head of Savage Creek Gulf.  This is a relatively flat, easy hike.  Meet Ranger Gheesling at Savage Ranger Station.

TRAIL RUN – BCR/LAUREL TRAILS
8:00 am –
Come out and stretch your legs this autumn, and join Ranger Aaron at the Stone Door parking lot for a moderate 7-mile trail run. We will run past the Great Stone Door and many other overlooks on the Big Creek Rim trail.  Runners must be able to keep at least a 12 min/mile pace. Wear trail shoes and bring a water bottle.

BACKPACKING TRAIL MEALS
2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Join Ranger James Holland to learn how to prepare a variety of backpacking trail recipes. The focus will be on preparing homemade, lightweight meals that are simple, easy, and made with affordable ingredients. Feel free to bring your favorite backpacking stove!

BARK IN THE PARK: BIG CREEK RIM/LAUREL TRAIL
11:00 AM -4:00 PM
Join Ranger McNeel and her furry friend, Zelda, for a 7 mile moderate hike along the Big Creek Rim and Laurel Traill! We will pass many overlooks along the Big Creek Rim trail and, with a little luck, will get to see some fall colors! Dogs must be on a leash at all times and if nature calls, please be ready to clean up after them. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes and bring plenty of water for both you and your dog! Meet us at the Stone Door Ranger Station!

FALL COLOR HIKE
2:00 pm –
Meet Ranger Aaron at the Stone Door parking lot for an easy 2-mile hike to see the beautiful Stone Door and overlooks. This is one of the best places to see the autumn colors in Tennessee! The Great Stone Door was used by early settlers as a passage way from the top of the plateau into the gorges below. Like a giant door left ajar, the crack is 10 feet wide and 100 feet deep! The surrounding cliffs offer spectacular views across the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a bottle of water, and don’t forget your camera! Meet at Stone Door parking lot.

WATER FILTRATION AND PURIFICATION: WILDERNESS

Water is vital is to survival! Join Ranger James Holland to learn how to obtain water in the backcountry and some of the methods and equipment used to for filtering and purifying water prior to using it.

EDIBLE AND MEDICINAL PLANTS

Meet Ranger James Holland to learn about some of the common edible and medicinal plants found in our area and their traditional uses.  We will then venture into the forest for field identification of some of the plants about which we have learned.

FIRECRAFT: A WILDERNESS SURVIVAL COURSE
2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Join Ranger James Holland to learn various methods of lighting a fire without matches.  Instruction will include using a ferro rod, fire from batteries, flint and steel, burning lens, fire piston, and friction fire with the bow drill.
